Mureșan explains PNL's support for a Niculescu-led cabinet with PSD ministers

MEP Siegfried Mureșan said PNL backed Luca Niculescu’s proposed government despite disappointment, citing a lack of parliamentary majority for a reform-focused cabinet.

In a recent statement, MEP Siegfried Mureșan sought to justify PNL’s decision to support the Luca Niculescu cabinet, even though it will be staffed by PSD ministers. He admitted that both his party and the public are dissatisfied with the proposed government, but emphasized that PNL lacks the parliamentary numbers needed to back a reform-oriented team. Mureșan noted that PNL, together with USR and UDMR, had previously put forward a slate of candidates he considered more competent for the eleven ministries the PSD now aims to control.

The coalition’s proposal received only 182 votes, far short of the 233 required for approval. Following the defeat, Mureșan called on the president to outline the next steps and pledged to work toward a better government in the upcoming elections.

Why it matters

The vote determines Romania's ability to form a government capable of pursuing reforms and EU funding.
