New barrage at Rantau Panjang to boost Penang's water storage by 2027

A new water barrage near Rantau Panjang is slated for completion by mid-2027, raising the existing structure by 30 cm to improve dry-season storage.

Officials say the upcoming barrage on the Penang side of the Muda River will replace an older facility and sit 30 cm higher, allowing more water to be retained during droughts. The project is part of federal works linked to the Mengkuang Dam expansion. Penang currently draws about 85 % of its supply from the Muda River, and low river levels earlier this year triggered contingency measures.

Why it matters

The barrage will enhance Penang's ability to manage water shortages during droughts.
