Oil climbs above $101, dragging US stocks lower amid US-Iran tensions

Brent crude topped $101 a barrel, pushing the S&P 500, Nasdaq and Dow Jones down as the US-Iran conflict raised inflation concerns.

Brent crude surged to $101.18 a barrel, the first time it crossed the $100 threshold since July, following a US strike that eliminated five Iranian tankers. The price jump intensified worries about fuel costs and inflation, prompting the S&P 500, Nasdaq and Dow Jones to fall by 0.48%, 0.70% and 0.74% respectively. Retail stocks, including Amazon and Starbucks, were among the biggest losers, whereas oil producers Exxon Mobil and Chevron rose modestly.

US gasoline prices are now about 32% higher than a year ago, and diesel hit a record $5.94 a gallon, adding pressure to consumer prices. Investors are turning to upcoming inflation data, with the Producer Price Index and Consumer Price Index due later in the week, while markets price in a roughly 60% chance of a Federal Reserve rate hike.

Why it matters

Higher oil prices are pushing US markets down and could fuel further inflation and interest-rate hikes.
