Online figure “Stegarul Dac” detained for 24 hours over alleged assault on a gendarme

Cezar Avrămuță, known online as “Stegarul Dac,” was taken into custody for a day on accusations that he pushed a gendarme during recent protests in Bucharest.

Cezar Avrămuță, popularly called “Stegarul Dac” on social media, was detained for 24 hours on Saturday after police claimed he pushed a gendarme near the Central Arrest building in Bucharest. The charge mirrors a prior contempt allegation that resulted in nearly six months of pre-trial custody, during which he was held at Giurgiu Penitentiary. Avrămuță’s lawyer verified the short-term detention, and the activist had previously announced his impending arrest via Facebook.

The arrest occurred amid large police deployments responding to protests supporting Călin Georgescu, during which dozens of sanctions were issued and several reports filed against demonstrators. Earlier, in December, Avrămuță was reportedly forced into a police van in Buftea after allegedly confronting officers, and he was later taken to the Corbeanca Police station for questioning. He had recently been released from Giurgiu after violating house-arrest conditions following the presidential election.

Why it matters

The detention highlights ongoing tensions between protest groups and Romanian law enforcement.
