Opposition leaders denounce government budget cuts as inadequate and harmful
Høyre leader Ine Eriksen Søreide and FrP leader Sylvi Listhaug criticised the government's tax and fee reductions, calling them insufficient and harmful to households.
Ine Eriksen Søreide of Høyre dismissed the government's proposed tax and duty reductions as poorly constructed and a tax deception, noting that the total cut amounts to only a small figure. Sylvi Listhaug of the Progress Party ridiculed the three-kroner-per-day tax cut, arguing it is immediately erased by higher fuel levies and rising interest rates. Both politicians said the measures will leave households with reduced purchasing power.
Centre Party finance spokesperson Bjørn Arild Gram highlighted that increased CO2 fees and higher road usage charges will raise fuel prices further, burdening low-income families, transport firms and farmers. He also warned that the budget includes funding that could lead to closures and centralisation of kindergartens, schools and nursing homes, affecting local services. NHO chief Ole Erik Almlid praised the income-tax cut but called for more relief for businesses and investors.
Why it matters

How the sides frame it
HIGH AGREEMENTBoth camps condemn the budget, but left-leaning coverage stresses the token nature of the cuts and their nullification by new taxes, while centrist coverage stresses the deceptive framing of the cuts and their broader harm to low-income families and public services.
LEFT
Coverage frames the budget as a superficial, ineffective token cut that is quickly erased by new tax hikes and lacks meaningful reforms
CENTER
Coverage frames the budget as a poorly constructed tax deception that harms households, burdens low-income families, and threatens closures of public services
The left emphasises
- superficial tax cut
- new tax hikes erase the cuts
- lack of reforms to boost efficiency and growth
