Posten faces up to 2,000 job cuts as weekly deliveries halve
A new state budget could force roughly 2,000 redundancies at Posten and cut its delivery schedule to once a week from July.
A recent state budget plan calls for major cost reductions at Posten, which may lead to the loss of around 2,000 jobs. The proposal also requires the postal service to reduce its delivery frequency from two days per one outlet to one day starting 1 July. The trade union Fagforbundet said it will hold off on comment until the budget is formally presented.
Posten Bring currently employs thousands of staff. The government also intends to increase withdrawals from the Oil Fund next year, following advice from the OECD and IMF to curb public spending. Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg said Norway's economy remains solid, with wages outpacing inflation and improved consumer purchasing power expected to boost private consumption.
Why it matters
The cuts could affect thousands of workers and change how Norwegians receive mail, while reflecting broader fiscal tightening.
