Page government urges Sánchez to call early general election amid housing setbacks

Second vice-president José Manuel Caballero pressed Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to call a snap election after two housing decrees were rejected by Congress.

In an interview on Onda Cero’s Julia en la Onda, José Manuel Caballero, second vice-president of Castilla-La Mancha and PSOE secretary-general in Ciudad Real, urged Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to dissolve parliament and schedule a general election. Caballero cited the recent parliamentary rejection of two government housing decrees as a blow to the administration’s credibility. He argued that postponing the vote would leave many voters without answers to their housing concerns.

The call for an early election is also intended to clear the political calendar ahead of the May 2027 regional and municipal polls, allowing those contests to focus on local issues. Caballero emphasized the need to increase housing supply, noting ongoing construction projects and reforms to the regional land and housing law aimed at unlocking dormant land.

Why it matters

The push for an early election could reshape Spain’s political landscape and affect upcoming regional and local votes.
