Parents of murdered receptionist detained during India Gate protest over new Sikkim governor

The parents of Ankita Bhandari were arrested early Thursday while protesting at India Gate against Dushyant Kumar Gautam’s appointment as Sikkim governor; they were later released.

On Thursday morning, the mother and father of Ankita Bhandari, a receptionist murdered in Pauri Garhwal in September 2022, were taken into custody at 4 a.m. after they began a sit-in at Delhi’s India Gate. Their protest called for the suspension of Dushyant Kumar Gautam’s recent appointment as governor of Sikkim until the Central Bureau of Investigation completes its investigation into alleged VIP involvement in the case.

After a few hours the police released the couple, during which time Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi arrived and stood with them. The mother announced she would start a hunger strike at home if authorities prevented further protest, while the father issued a 24-hour ultimatum to cancel the appointment, warning of nationwide street protests. Activist Yogita Bhayana and members of the Cockroach Janta Party also voiced support, and several Congress legislators condemned the police action as harsh toward grieving parents seeking justice.

Why it matters

The incident underscores political friction over a contentious governor appointment and demands for a fresh probe into a high-profile murder.
