Parliamentary committee summons former chief prosecutor Fürcht Pál for testimony

The parliamentary Committee on Abuse of Enforcement Powers will interview former Central Prosecutor's Office chief Fürcht Pál after his resignation sparked internal disputes.

The Hungarian Parliament's Committee on Abuse of Enforcement Powers, established in May with six members, scheduled a hearing for former head of the Central Prosecutor's Office, Fürcht Pál. Representatives from the Tisza Party, Fidesz, KDNP and Mi Hazánk each have a seat on the panel. Toroczkai László of Mi Hazánk recently sent a summons to Fürcht Pál, who then turned up at the parliamentary office, allowing the committee to convene the interview out of the usual schedule.

Committee chair Mi Hazánk officials expressed confidence that Pál’s testimony could provide decisive insight into the alleged “enforcement-mafia” and internal fractures, especially concerning the gold convoy case and other investigations. The list of potential witnesses compiled in September includes figures such as Varga Judit, Rogán Antal, Schadl György and Tuzson Bence. Fürcht Pál’s resignation became public in June after he warned the chief prosecutor about legal shortcomings in the March seizure of Ukrainian money transfers, a warning that was reportedly ignored.

Why it matters

The hearing could expose internal corruption in Hungary's prosecution service and affect enforcement practices.
