PAS spiritual leader urges swift Umno alliance ahead of Melaka elections

PAS syura council chair Hashim called for accelerated talks with Umno to form an alliance for the Melaka polls, while waiting on the outcome of PN’s suspension.

The head of PAS’s syura council, Hashim, urged the party’s central leadership to continue negotiations with Umno and to steer clear of any moves that might cause division. He argued that securing a PAS-Umno alliance for the Melaka state elections is a crucial step toward expanding the coalition for the 16th general election. While PN remains suspended, Hashim said the focus should stay on building PAS-Umno cooperation, allowing the suspension’s outcome to unfold.

He emphasized that party leaders must prioritize the ummah’s interests over personal ambitions, particularly in seat-talk discussions. Meanwhile, Barisan Nasional is expected to start talks with prospective allies next week, and its chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has previously signaled openness to partnering with PN in Melaka after the BN-PN coalition won a two-thirds majority in the recent Negeri Sembilan election.

Why it matters

The talks could reshape Malaysia's opposition landscape ahead of key state and national elections.
