PNL faction backs Siegfried Mureșan but lacks PSD support for premiership
A conservative bloc within the PNL plans to vote for Siegfried Mureșan as prime minister, but without PSD backing he cannot secure a parliamentary majority.
Within the National Liberal Party (PNL), a conservative faction opposed to Premier Ilie Bolojan will vote in parliament to invest Siegfried Mureșan as prime minister, adding roughly 15 votes to his tally. Despite this boost, Mureșan remains far from the majority needed, as the Social Democratic Party (PSD) has not pledged its support. One outlet coalition of PNL, USR and UDMR still requires about 50 more votes to form a government.
In a meeting, Ilie Bolojan asked PSD President Sorin Grindeanu whether his party might back Mureșan, to which Grindeanu replied that PSD would not vote for someone who repeatedly insults them. PSD has already issued a unanimous vote against Mureșan, though a final parliamentary decision has not yet been made. No direct contact has occurred between Grindeanu and Mureșan, and the PSD leader said he awaits the government program and ministerial list before giving a definitive answer.
