PNL faction considers backing AUR to suspend President Nicușor Dan

Several PNL figures close to Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan met in a restricted party setting to explore the possibility of supporting a parliamentary initiative to suspend President Nicușor Dan. The proposal hinges on the president’s upcoming decision on a prime-ministerial nominee; if he selects PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu, some liberals say they would sign the suspension petition, even if it means partnering with the nationalist AUR.

AUR, led by George Simion, asserts it has collected 112 of the 155 signatures needed to trigger the process and is turning the effort into a longer-term campaign. Although both Ilie Bolojan and USR leader Dominic Fritz have dismissed the suspension idea, analysts like Cristian Roșu note that the threat alone could shift political dynamics and keep AUR’s base mobilised. Should PNL and USR join AUR, the coalition would secure enough votes for a suspension referendum, where a lowered turnout threshold of 30% could favour removal of the president, whose popularity is currently low.
