Poland warns of Russian false-flag plots as hybrid attacks intensify
Polish officials say Russia is preparing a major provocation, possibly a false-flag drone strike, to justify mobilising its troops.
At a Council of Foreign Relations meeting in New York, Polish foreign minister Radosław Sikorski warned that Russian intelligence is planning a significant provocation, possibly a false-flag drone strike, to give Putin a pretext for mobilising forces. Poland has long prepared for a Russian confrontation and recently recorded a Russian military helicopter intruding into its airspace for 42 seconds, as well as numerous unarmed drones crossing NATO territory.
The government also alleges a pattern of cyber-attacks, sabotage of infrastructure such as a Starlink station, and a surge in Russian-backed disinformation aimed at stoking anti-Ukrainian sentiment. Intelligence services in Denmark and other EU states have issued similar alerts about an escalating hybrid war. Warsaw has responded by strengthening its eastern border, including building a fence and allocating billions for security, while accusing Russia of exploiting migration flows and hiring Ukrainian operatives for sabotage.
