PP leader Feijóo signals coalition options with Vox ahead of upcoming election
Alberto Núñez Feijóo admitted the People's Party will need a partnership with Vox to form a government and is open to including Vox candidates on PP lists.
In a recent interview, Alberto Núñez Feijóo acknowledged that the People's Party cannot govern without a coalition partner and indicated willingness to work with Vox, either by having the far-right party step aside in selected provinces or by placing Vox candidates on PP ballots, mirroring earlier alliances with UPN in Navarra and Foro in Asturias. He argued that a robust parliamentary majority is essential for the incoming prime minister and stressed the joint objective of attaining a three-fifths majority in the Senate to shape the Constitutional Court for the next decade.
Feijóo also referenced successful regional cooperation with Vox in four autonomous communities as a model for national negotiations. Party spokesperson Borja Sémper, who left politics in 2020, supported the new direction, stating it is necessary to ensure change in Spain. The PP also aims to challenge the voting rights of naturalised citizens under the so-called “law of grandchildren,” aligning with Vox’s stance on the issue.
Why it matters
The potential PP-Vox alliance could reshape Spain's government composition and influence key institutions like the Senate and Constitutional Court.
