Premier‑designate Luca Niculescu says he intends to file cabinet list and governing programme on Thursday

President Nicușor Dan has appointed Luca‑Alexandru Niculescu, a former diplomat and state secretary who coordinated Romania’s OECD accession, as prime‑ministerial candidate. Niculescu has begun talks with the PSD, PNL and UDMR and has ten days to draft a governing programme and a list of ministers for a parliamentary confidence vote. He said he intends to submit the cabinet list and programme on Thursday, while noting he has not excluded the possibility of stepping down if coalition negotiations fail. The outcome will determine whether Romania adopts a political, technocratic or mixed cabinet and how it pursues deficit reduction and further OECD reforms.

Why it matters

The composition and programme of the new government will shape Romania’s fiscal policy, reform agenda and prospects for OECD accession.
