PSD chief urges broad coalition with PNL and UDMR to steer Romania through crisis
PSD president Sorin Grindeanu called on PNL and UDMR to join a new governing coalition, stressing political responsibility amid economic hardship.
PSD president Sorin Grindeanu appealed to the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) to form a new executive, arguing that Romania’s current economic and financial challenges demand a united political response. Speaking on Antena 3 one outlet, he emphasized that PSD is ready to be part of the solution only if the arrangement is equitable and not merely advantageous to a single party, rejecting both a technocratic cabinet and a fragile minority government as detrimental.
Grindeanu suggested a coalition lasting until the spring, when the economic situation will be reassessed, and warned that a weak government could lead to budget deficits and legislative deadlock. PNL leader Ilie Bolojan clarified that his party will not take ministerial seats but will back the government’s formation in parliament, and UDMR mayor Antal Arpad said his group will vote for the cabinet while awaiting the major parties’ positions, rejecting any alliance with AUR or SOS. The PSD, out of government for six months, sees a broad coalition as the safest path to avoid a disastrous scenario for the country.
Why it matters
A stable coalition could shape Romania’s economic policy and avert a fiscal crisis.
