Prime Minister's secretary Azman Abidin enters race for Paya Rumput seat
Azman Abidin, the prime minister’s political secretary, confirmed he will contest the Paya Rumput constituency in the upcoming Malacca state election.
Azman Abidin, serving as the prime minister’s political secretary, has declared his intention to run for the Paya Rumput constituency in the forthcoming Malacca state election. The seat was captured by BN’s Rais Yasin in 2021 with a slim majority of 629 votes, defeating a five-cornered field that included former senior political secretary Shamsul Iskandar Akin on a Pakatan Harapan ticket. BN’s state chair Ab Rauf Yusoh indicated the party will step aside for a coalition partner in Paya Rumput, prompting Rais to shift his campaign to Sungai Udang. The election, scheduled for November 14, will see 687,697 registered voters, including army and police personnel, with nomination day on October 31 and early voting on November 10.
Why it matters
The candidacy of a senior aide to the prime minister could reshape party dynamics and voter alignments in a key Malacca constituency.
