Prominent activists and politicians invited to unauthorized anti-Election Commission march in Delhi

A coalition of students, farmers and civil groups has organized a Delhi march demanding the removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar and the repeal of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, inviting several high-profile figures and proceeding without police permission.

People Against SIR, a week-old coalition of farmers, students and civil-society groups, scheduled a “People’s March to Reclaim Democracy” in Delhi, demanding the ouster of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the abolition of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Invited participants include CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, student leaders Neha Bora and Aishe Ghosh, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, economist Parakala Prabhakar, actor-activist Prakash Raj, farmer leader Rakesh Tikait and author Tushar Gandhi.

The protest will move from Bangla Sahib Gurdwara in Connaught Place to the Election Commission office near Patel Chowk, and will not seek police permission, warning security forces against using force. If blocked, organizers plan a “People’s Parliament” and a dispersal after singing the national anthem. Previous related actions saw thousands of security personnel deployed and thousands detained, though many of the named invitees have since been released. No comment was received from Delhi Police at the time of reporting.

Why it matters

The protest underscores rising opposition to changes in India's voter-roll process and challenges to the Election Commission's authority.
