Prosecutors Highlight Financial Discrepancies in Vice President Duterte's Impeachment Case

Prosecutor Chel Diokno argued that the numbers in Vice President Sara Duterte's financial statements reveal unexplained wealth, emphasizing that documents, not witnesses, form the core of Article II in her impeachment trial.

In the Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, prosecutor Chel Diokno explained that Article II focuses on alleged unexplained wealth revealed by financial documents rather than testimonial evidence. He cited bank records, AMLC reports, and tax filings that show joint time-deposit accounts worth tens of millions of pesos and cash holdings that were not reflected in Duterte's Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth.

A forensic analyst, Alexander Cabrera, quantified undeclared cash totaling over P207 million for 2022-2025, and a broader mismatch of nearly P818 million. Diokno emphasized that the proceeding seeks to assess the vice president's fitness for office and the public's trust, not to target her personally. He noted that the evidence was transmitted directly from banks and the Bureau of Internal Revenue to the impeachment court, ensuring its independence. With Article III dropped, the prosecution now concentrates on Article II, along with Articles I and IV concerning fund misuse and alleged threats.
