PTI blames federal government for stalled talks over Imran Khan access and counter-terrorism plan

The PTI claims negotiations with the centre broke down after the government refused to add provisions for immediate access to imprisoned party founder Imran Khan.

A delegation from the PTI and TTAP met with a federal-PPP negotiating team, but the talks ended without agreement after the centre declined to incorporate the PTI's request for immediate access to Imran Khan, who is incarcerated at Rawalpindi's Adiala jail. The PTI argued that such access was essential for consulting the party leader on matters of national importance and for arranging his transfer to Shifa International Hospital and a medical board.

Although the government agreed to restore family and lawyer visits, it did not accept the broader health and access provisions. The negotiations also touched on security in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with the PTI demanding joint, consultative counter-terrorism measures, while the centre insisted on unilateral provincial actions. Federal ministers later blamed the KP chief minister for the collapse, and the PTI accused the centre of shifting responsibility for the failure.

Why it matters

The standoff highlights tensions over political participation, the health of a jailed former leader, and divergent counter-terrorism strategies in Pakistan.
