Putin's Red Square Military Music Festival Cancelled Amid Surge in Drone Strikes

The Spasskaya Tower International Military Music Festival, scheduled for late August, has been called off, with organizers citing reasons beyond their control as Russia faces intensified drone attacks.

The Spasskaya Tower International Military Music Festival, which was to run from August 21 for nine days on Red Square, was abruptly cancelled, with organizers attributing the move to circumstances outside their control. This marks only the second time the event has been halted since its inception in 2007, the first being during the COVID pandemic. The cancellation follows a wave of Ukrainian drone strikes that saw over 600 unmanned aircraft launched at Moscow on Sunday, resulting in at least seven fatalities across several regions.

In recent months, Russia has also abandoned its traditional Russia Day concert, Victory Day festivities, and a grand Navy Day parade, citing security concerns. President Putin has responded with a forceful speech condemning Ukraine and invoking historical references. The drone campaign has also damaged Russian oil infrastructure and hit major commercial targets such as a Wildberries warehouse near Moscow, injuring three people.

Why it matters

The festival's cancellation highlights the growing impact of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian public events and national morale.
