Republicans question plan to livestream execution of Fort Hood shooter

A number of Republican officials have expressed opposition to, or refusal to watch, a proposed livestream of the Fort Hood shooter’s execution scheduled for Dec. 3.

The execution of the former Army major convicted of the 2009 Fort Hood massacre is set for Dec. 3, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that it may be livestreamed. President Trump indicated the decision is still under review, offering conflicting statements about his involvement. Republican leaders such as House Speaker Johnson, Senators Murkowski and Cramer, and Rep. Ann Wagner have publicly criticized the idea, arguing it could inspire future extremists and turn a solemn punishment into entertainment.

Vice President Mike Pence and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said they would not view a broadcast and warned against creating a martyr. The debate centers on balancing transparency with the risk of providing a platform for extremist propaganda.
