Romanian foreign ministry summons Russian ambassador over alleged sabotage of Brașov weapons plant

Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called in the Russian ambassador to demand explanations for a sabotage operation that ignited a fire at the Carfil platform of the Romarm weapons factory in Brașov, accusing Moscow of coordinating the attack.

Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally summoned the Russian Federation’s ambassador in Bucharest to lodge a protest over the sabotage that caused a blaze at the Carfil industrial platform of the Romarm arms factory in Brașov, alleging that the operation was orchestrated from Russia. The ministry warned that such acts constitute hybrid warfare aimed at destabilising European states and undermining regional security.

Ongoing investigations by the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) and the national police have traced a sabotage network back to Russian coordinators, identifying three foreign operatives - two Belarusians and one Ukrainian - as participants. Two suspects were detained in Germany while the third was tracked to Poland, where a European arrest warrant has been issued. Romanian officials also used the audience to condemn repeated Russian attacks on commercial shipping in the Black Sea, describing them as breaches of international law that threaten maritime safety and regional stability.

Why it matters

The diplomatic clash signals heightened tensions over alleged Russian interference in European critical infrastructure and maritime security.
