Romanian parliament to vote on Siegfried Muresan's proposed centre-right cabinet
Lawmakers will vote on Prime Minister-designate Siegfried Muresan's centre-right cabinet, which is unlikely to secure the 233 votes needed for a majority.
Romanian legislators are set to cast their votes on a new cabinet put forward by Prime Minister-designate Siegfried Muresan, who describes the program as reform-oriented. Muresan, a member of the European Parliament since 2014, says he has the backing of about 170 lawmakers after talks with minority groups and independents, but he still falls short of the 233 votes required for a governing majority. His coalition relies on the National Liberal Party, the Save Romania Union and the Hungarian minority party UDMR, while the Social Democratic Party and the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians have refused support.
The political deadlock began in May when a joint no-confidence motion by the PSD and AUR ousted Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. President Nicusor Dan has called for an end to the crisis, arguing that early elections would only prolong uncertainty and damage financial markets. Analysts warn that if Muresan's cabinet fails, a new presidential nominee may shift Romania toward a more populist, less pro-European direction.
