Russia multiplies jet-powered Shahed drone strikes fivefold in one month
Ukraine's air force says Russia used five times more jet-powered Shahed drones in July than in June, indicating a rapid expansion of its high-speed drone production.
Ukrainian air force spokesman Yuriy Ignat reported that Russia deployed jet-powered Shahed drones in July at a rate five times greater than in June, underscoring a sharp increase in Moscow's production of the newer Geran-3 and Geran-4 variants. These turbojet-driven drones travel at speeds of 200 mph or more and can operate up to 30,000 feet, outpacing Ukraine's ground-based interceptors. Ukrainian officials noted that jet-powered drones already comprised up to two-thirds of Russia's long-range attacks by mid-August.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said 800 jet-powered drones were launched in a four-day span, part of a total of 1,500 long-range drones. Drone analyst Serhii "Flash" Beskrestnov claimed more than 2,500 jet-powered Shaheds were used in August, up from 1,500 in July, and warned they are being produced and fielded almost directly from factories. Ukraine is working on new interceptors, with four firms reportedly developing technology to counter the faster drones, while also confronting the hybrid S8000 Banderol weapon.
