Russia unleashes massive missile and drone barrage on Kyiv and Ukrainian cities
Russia launched a large missile and drone strike on Ukraine overnight, hitting Kyiv and other areas, with most drones intercepted by Ukrainian defenses.
During the early hours of Thursday, Russia carried out an extensive missile and drone assault on Ukraine, deploying two Oniks anti-ship cruise missiles, 258 unmanned aerial vehicles and an unspecified number of ballistic missiles. Ukrainian air force officials said roughly nine-tenths of the drones were destroyed, along with one Oniks missile and seven ballistic projectiles. The barrage hit the capital Kyiv, where debris damaged a school and shattered windows at a health centre, and also struck the Black Sea port of Odesa, industrial sites in Poltava, a steel-mining hub in Kryvyi Rih and the city of Zaporizhzhia, injuring several civilians.
Five Russian drones entered neighbouring Moldova’s airspace during the operation. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged European partners to accelerate delivery of Patriot-type interceptors, noting a recent small batch had arrived. Russia’s defence ministry claimed the attacks targeted military-industrial facilities, metallurgical plants, oil-refining sites and logistics centres supporting Ukrainian forces.
