Russian drone raids wound five in Kyiv as alerts sound across the capital

Russian drones struck Kyiv on Sept. 26, injuring at least five people and prompting a series of air-raid alerts.

Russian forces launched a wave of drone strikes on Kyiv on Sept. 26, resulting in at least five civilian injuries and a cascade of five air-raid alerts throughout the city. The most severe damage occurred in the Solomianskyi district, where a drone hit a five-storey apartment building, forcing the evacuation of 20 occupants and igniting a roof fire on a nearby office block. Additional fires erupted in Darnytskyi, Obolonskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts, the latter affecting a shopping and entertainment centre.

This assault follows attacks on Sept. 25 that killed seven people, including a 14-year-old Israeli boy, and injured 59, two of them children. Ukrainian officials note an increased use of fast jet-powered drones such as the Geran-5, prompting development of interceptor drones, though mass production has not been announced.

Why it matters

The strikes highlight the escalating threat of Russian jet-powered drones to Kyiv’s civilian population and infrastructure.
