Russian drone strike damages Kyiv's Southern Bridge, halting traffic
A Russian drone hit Kyiv's Southern Bridge on Oct. 1, damaging its support structures and forcing a suspension of both road and metro traffic.
On Oct. 1, a Russian drone struck the Southern Bridge in central Kyiv, causing damage to the bridge's support, barrier, road surface and the concrete shielding of the metro tunnel, according to city officials. Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that both road and metro traffic over the bridge have been suspended while emergency services responded to the scene. Residents recorded footage showing flames and smoke rising from the structure.
This incident follows two earlier drone hits near the bridge's supports earlier the same day, the first occasion Russian drones have targeted a Kyiv bridge. The strike comes amid an intensified wave of Russian drone attacks on the city since late August, using faster jet-powered models that challenge Ukrainian air defenses. Separate Russian attacks across Ukraine on Oct. 1 resulted in at least six deaths and thirty-eight injuries.
