Severe 'dana' storm dumps 120mm in Malaga’s El Palo, triggers red alert
A sudden 'dana' storm in Malaga’s eastern district poured over 120 mm of rain within an hour, prompting a red alert and flooding many homes.
Early Sunday, a fast-moving 'dana' called Adam unleashed intense rainfall in Malaga’s eastern district, recording up to 120 mm in just one hour and prompting Aemet to issue a red alert for the Axarquía. The deluge turned streets into rivers, flooding ground floors, basements and garages, and generated roughly 50 emergency calls about water damage and fallen trees. The DGT shut both directions of the MA-3101 Montes road after landslides, and nearly 6,000 lightning strikes were logged across the region.
Residents like Cristina Pérez recounted being stranded, while neighbours Carlos and Sofía offered shelter and clothing. The storm forced the El Palo health centre’s A&E unit to move temporarily to the Cruz de Humilladero centre. By early morning, rainfall eased, limiting further damage.
