Shubman Gill becomes fourth-youngest Indian to hit 3,000 Test runs
Shubman Gill reached 3,000 Test runs at 26 years and 349 days, making him the fourth-youngest Indian to do so during the second Test in Colombo.
During the second Test between India and Sri Lanka at Colombo's Sinhalese Sports Club, Shubman Gill became the fourth-youngest Indian to compile 3,000 Test runs. The captain entered the match needing just seven runs and reached the landmark in the 23rd over when an outside edge off Keshara Nuwantha raced to the rope. At 26 years and 349 days, Gill overtook Kapil Dev and now sits behind Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Dilip Vengsarkar on the age-based list.
He had missed the target by seven runs in the series opener at Galle, but a swift boundary after a defensive start against Prabath Jayasuriya secured the achievement. Sri Lanka had made early inroads, dismissing KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal before lunch, leaving India at 88/2 with Gill unbeaten on 11.
Why it matters
Gill's rapid rise places him among India's legendary batsmen, highlighting his importance to the national team.
