Spanish public backs nationwide strike and says housing crisis will drive voting

A large majority of Spaniards support a planned general strike demanding housing reforms and higher wages, and 64% say the housing crisis will motivate them to vote.

A recent poll indicates that around six in ten Spaniards approve a forthcoming general strike aimed at securing rent controls and wage increases, with the initiative backed by the Sindicato de Inquilinas and unions CCOO, UGT and CGT. One-third of those surveyed do not support the strike, and another third are still unsure whether they will join. Younger voters show the strongest identification with the need to halt the country’s current trajectory.

The housing crisis, which concerns a similar share of the population across the political spectrum, is seen as a major motivator for electoral participation, with 64% saying it will push them to the polls. Progressive voters, particularly those for PSOE and Sumar, are the most likely to be mobilized by the issue, while a sizable share of right-wing voters say it will not affect their voting plans.

Why it matters

The strike and housing concerns could shape Spain's upcoming elections and policy agenda.
