Sudanese army claims capture of RSF stronghold al-Mazroud in North Kordofan
The Sudanese Armed Forces announced they seized al-Mazroud, a key Rapid Support Forces base in North Kordofan, after intense fighting.
The Sudanese Armed Forces reported that they have taken control of al-Mazroud in North Kordofan following fierce clashes with the Rapid Support Forces. The fighting caused RSF personnel losses and the destruction of multiple combat vehicles. Army Special Forces spokesman Mohammed Deidan highlighted the town’s strategic position linking North and West Kordofan, saying its seizure aims to cut RSF supply lines.
Al-Mazroud was previously identified as the RSF’s biggest stronghold in the north of the state. Since the war began in April 2023, Kordofan has become one of the most contested zones, with the army dominant in the north, the RSF in the west, and South Kordofan remaining disputed. Recent ethnic tensions were amplified when the Sudan Doctors Network accused the RSF-aligned SPLM-N of an artillery strike in Dilling, South Kordofan.
Why it matters
Control of al-Mazroud could shift supply dynamics in a key battleground of Sudan's ongoing civil war.
