Taiwan’s defence minister Wellington Koo announced that ongoing US arms sales to the island are proceeding as before, and negotiations on individual procurements are active. He said the United States has given no indication of altering its policy toward Taiwan. A record $14 billion weapons package, however, has been frozen after a May meeting in Beijing between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping, with China urging a halt.
Koo noted that 66 advanced F-16V fighters have reached the stage where they can be shipped, though pandemic-related delays have pushed the original 2024 delivery timeline. The United States remains Taiwan’s principal informal security partner, bound by law to support its self-defence. Experts predict that upcoming US-China summits will keep the issue in abeyance, but long-term arms sales are seen as inevitable.
