Taiwan schedules five televised debates ahead of nuclear power referendum

The Central Election Commission announced that five televised forums will take place between November 12 and November 20 to present opposing views on a referendum seeking to repeal Taiwan's nuclear-free homeland policy and permit nuclear power for economic development. The Legislative Yuan will represent proponents of the referendum, while the Executive Yuan will voice opposition. The proposal, introduced by the Kuomintang and supported by the Taiwan People's Party, joins three earlier nuclear referendums, the latest of which in 2021 rejected restarting a mothballed plant.

Interested parties must secure CEC approval under Article 20 of the Referendum Act and file their candidate lists by October 15. The referendum will be held alongside the nine-in-one local elections on November 28, where citizens will also elect municipal leaders and councilors.
