Teachers, Parents and Community Leaders Keep Johor Students Learning During Haze Closure

After a two-day haze-related school shutdown, teachers, parents and local leaders coordinated home-based learning for over 600,000 Johor students.

Johor authorities ordered a two-day closure of all schools to protect students from unhealthy air quality, affecting every one of the state’s 1,198 schools and more than 600,000 pupils. Teachers quickly moved to home-based instruction, using platforms like DELIMa, WhatsApp and Google Classroom to share materials and track engagement. Parents prepared digital devices and reliable Wi-Fi at home, enabling their children to join lessons.

Local community leaders, such as village heads, circulated closure information via messaging apps and conducted patrols to keep children safe. School administrations and parent-teacher associations continued to communicate updates through both physical and online channels.
