Teen driver claims father will handle aftermath after Mini Cooper kills three near Kochi airport

A 19-year-old driving a Mini Cooper collided with a scooter near Cochin International Airport, killing three students; the driver told locals his father would take care of the matter.

In the early hours of Sunday, a Mini Cooper driven by 19-year-old Suhail Sajeev rammed a scooter on the road leading to Cochin International Airport in Nedumbassery, killing three young workers—Devika (21), Gopika (22) and Ijaz (21). Witness Salim described a loud crash followed by pedestrians rushing to the scene, and said the driver told residents his father would “handle everything” when confronted. Police arrived, found the victims already unresponsive, and arrested the driver, taking blood and urine samples to test for alcohol and narcotics.

Superintendent KS Sudarshan said the accused faces a charge of culpable homicide. Additional evidence includes Instagram clips allegedly showing the Mini Cooper exceeding 200 km/h and a review of CCTV footage. The incident highlights concerns over drunk and reckless driving in the region.

Why it matters

The crash underscores the dangers of drunk, high-speed driving and raises questions about accountability for privileged offenders.
