Traditional Czech parties lose ground in 2026 local elections as independents surge
The 2026 municipal elections saw a sharp decline in seats for established national parties, while independent candidates secured a record number of council seats.
In the latest municipal polls, ANO led in overall votes but the Christian Democrats (KDU-ČSL) emerged as the largest holder of council seats among nationwide parties. Independents dominated the council landscape, winning more than fifty thousand seats, a historic peak. Traditional parties faced setbacks: ODS lost several hundred seats, SOCDEM and SPD saw substantial drops, and the Communist Party fell to under a hundred seats.
STAN's representation declined only marginally, staying close to its 2022 level. The results underscore a long-term trend of shrinking influence for established parties, contrasted with growing strength of local independent candidates, especially in smaller municipalities.
Why it matters
The shift signals a restructuring of Czech local politics, with independents gaining power at the expense of traditional parties.
