Trump and Putin discuss stalled Ukraine peace talks and possible diesel shipments
In a phone call, President Trump and President Putin said the Ukraine peace process is unlikely to resume soon, citing recent Ukrainian attacks on Moscow.
Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev said a pause in attacks on Ukraine’s power infrastructure would depend on the removal of certain U.S. sanctions. Kyiv, dealing with outages after an Oct 8 strike, warned that easing sanctions could enable further Russian military spending. On Oct 9, officials from the United States, Ukraine and the European E3 group met in Miami to discuss protecting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, grain exports and security guarantees.
The Ukrainian delegation, led by Kyrylo Budanov, Rustem Umerov, Sergiy Kyslytsia and Davyd Arakhamia, also plans to meet former White House adviser Jared Kushner and real‑estate developer Steve Witkoff in the United States. A European negotiating group is expected to meet with both the Ukrainian and U.S. teams.
Why it matters
The outcome could determine whether attacks on Ukraine’s power grid ease and how U.S. sanctions on Russia are adjusted.
How the sides frame it
MODERATE AGREEMENTAll camps report the Miami meeting and its focus on energy, grain and security, but left-leaning coverage stresses Russia’s demand for sanctions relief tied to a cease-fire, while right-leaning coverage highlights U.S. diesel shipments and Zelensky’s push for tougher sanctions, with centrist coverage staying largely factual about the talks and economic proposals.
LEFT
Frames the talks as a constructive diplomatic effort hampered by Russia’s demand for sanctions relief and its aggressive actions.
CENTER
Frames the meetings as factual negotiations involving technical trilateral talks and economic initiatives such as diesel shipments.
RIGHT
Frames the talks as linked to U.S. leverage—diesel deals and sanctions pressure—while underscoring Russian attacks that threaten negotiations.

- "constructive talks"
- "energy resilience"
