Turkish football referee chief and six officials detained in fraud investigation
On Sept. 29 Turkish authorities took the chairman of the Turkish Football Federation’s Central Referee Board and six other football officials into custody as part of a probe into alleged document forgery and workplace harassment.
Turkish law enforcement detained Ferhat Gündoğdu, the head of the Turkish Football Federation’s Central Referee Board, along with six additional football officials on Sept. 29 in a fraud-related operation spanning Istanbul, Ankara, Elazığ and Manisa. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office named the sweep the “Referees File” after receiving a formal complaint and employing audits from the Financial Crimes Investigation Board, telecommunications data, witness testimony and expert reports.
Prosecutors claim the group used forged documents and intimidation to influence referee rankings, promotion examinations and match-appointment decisions. The detained individuals comprise Ferdi Karadoruk, president of the TFF Active Referees Association, former MHK vice-president Ahmet Şahin, former board member Yunus Yıldırım, and several regional and association administrators. Justice Minister Akın Gürlek highlighted the state’s resolve to uphold integrity in sports, noting that no position grants immunity from the law. He affirmed that the investigation aims to restore public trust in Turkish football by addressing any irregularities that threaten fair competition.
