A joint declaration from the foreign ministers of twelve nations—including Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom—reiterated commitment to a two-state solution and introduced trade restrictions on products originating from Israeli settlements considered illegal in the occupied Palestinian territories. Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh described the measures as a step in the right direction but called for binding international steps to halt settlement growth and the de-facto annexation of the West Bank, particularly the controversial E1 project linking Jerusalem to the Maale Adumim settlement.
He warned that the E1 plan could split the West Bank, undermining prospects for a contiguous Palestinian state. Al-Sheikh urged respect for international law, UN Security Council resolutions and accountability for settler-related violence. The announcement comes amid rising Israeli military actions in the West Bank since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023, which Palestinian officials say include killings, home demolitions and restrictions on farmers. The trade restrictions aim to pressure Israel by targeting economic benefits of settlement production.
