Ukrainian strikes ignite fires at oil sites in Volgograd and Samara
Ukrainian forces hit oil infrastructure in Russia's Volgograd and Samara regions overnight, causing fires at a Lukoil refinery and a major distribution station.
Overnight Ukrainian forces reportedly launched attacks on oil facilities in Russia's Volgograd and Samara regions, sparking fires at both sites. According to activist Serhii Sternenko and the Exilenova Plus monitoring channel, the likely targets were the Volgograd Oil Refinery, owned by Lukoil, and a key oil distribution station near the settlement of Prosvet in Samara. The Volgograd refinery, one of Russia's largest with an annual capacity of roughly 15 million metric tons, has suffered multiple strikes this year, temporarily halting production.
The Samara station plays a crucial role in blending crude for the Urals export blend and was previously hit by Ukrainian drones in April, damaging five 20,000-cubic-meter tanks. President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Oct. 1 that Ukrainian forces had successfully struck an oil facility in Samara Oblast as part of a series of long-range attacks on Russian military and energy targets. One outlet could not independently confirm the extent of the damage.
Why it matters
The attacks aim to disrupt Russia's fuel supply chain and pressure its war economy.
