UMNO says Pakatan Harapan pressure mounts after Johor and Negri Sembilan wins

During the debate on the UMNO president’s policy speech at the 2026 UMNO General Assembly in Kuala Lumpur, deputy chief Muhammad Iqbal Jamal Jamaluddin argued that the party’s victories in the Johor and Negri Sembilan state elections demonstrate a resurgence of voter confidence and have reignited political pressure from Pakatan Harapan. He questioned why such attacks did not emerge when the unity government was formed three years earlier and called on party members to act with composure, uphold the rule of law, and cooperate with any Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission investigations or court proceedings, even for historic allegations.

Iqbal accused PH of trying to weaken UMNO and urged the coalition to examine its own policy failures, citing free tolls, the proposed abolition of PTPTN, fuel prices and the split of prime-ministerial and finance roles. He dismissed PH’s claim that UMNO relied on identity politics, pointing to Malay voters’ rejection of DAP and discomfort with PH’s “Malaysian Malaysia” stance. Referring to PAS’s recent muktamar, he warned that any Islamic-unity arrangement that leaves PAS with its GE15 seats could limit UMNO’s prospects in states such as Perak, Perlis, Kedah and Terengganu, and called for a clear strategy ahead of GE16.
