Vučić admits loss, warns that opposition win endangers Serbia

President Aleksandar Vučić conceded his party’s defeat in Sunday’s Serbian parliamentary vote and warned that the opposition’s success threatens the nation.

Following the closure of polls, President Aleksandar Vučić acknowledged that his coalition, the Serbian Progressive Party, suffered a defeat, winning 105 of the 250 parliamentary seats. Preliminary counts suggest the Student List - Students Win (SL) will claim a majority with roughly 135-140 mandates, while the Vojvodina Hungarian Alliance (VMSZ) secured three seats and the Albanian and Bosniak minority parties each obtained one.

Vučić highlighted that the opposition also performed well among Serbian voters abroad, citing victories in Montenegro, North Macedonia and the Bosnian Serb Republic. He extended a mocking congratulation to Natasa Kandić, an octogenarian human-rights advocate who contributed evidence to the ICTY predecessor, and warned that the new government will act against Serbia’s interests. Vučić concluded by asserting that his supporters will continue to defend the nation from any assaults or harassment.

Why it matters

The election outcome signals a potential shift in Serbia’s political direction and could affect its EU accession path.
