Wagner founder allegedly planned a NATO corridor invasion pending high-level approval
Former Wagner boss Evgheni Prigojin is said to have considered seizing the Suwałki Corridor in 2023, but the operation never received the required orders.
Telegram messages from Igor Eliseev, Prigojin’s former lawyer, reveal that the Wagner group evaluated an operation to occupy the Suwałki Corridor, a strategic 65-kilometre strip bordering Poland and Lithuania, to open a terrestrial route to Kaliningrad. Eliseev said the mercenaries were prepared to act but required approval from higher authorities, which they never received. The idea was reportedly discussed with Prigojin after a march, and the same corridor was cited earlier by Andrei Kartapolov of the Russian State Duma’s Defense Committee as a possible target.
In July 2023, Polish officials warned that around 100 Wagner fighters were heading toward Poland, and there were reports of attempts to breach Polish territory. The corridor’s importance grew after Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea and the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, prompting NATO to reinforce its presence in the area.
