Zelensky declares end to refinery pause as Ukraine hits Ryazan plant

Ukraine has resumed attacks on Russian oil refineries, with the first strike hitting the Rosneft-owned Ryazan facility, after a three-day halt requested by Donald Trump.

Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine’s three-day pause on hitting Russian oil refineries, taken at Donald Trump’s request, has ended. He accused Russia of violating an energy ceasefire by repeatedly striking Ukrainian power infrastructure and causing roughly 100 civilian deaths in the past week. The first post-pause strike hit the Rosneft-run Ryazan refinery, leading the regional governor to cancel classes in dozens of schools and kindergartens.

A drone-related flare was seen over the plant, and authorities confirmed a fire and damage to a nearby warehouse and vehicles. Russia’s Defense Ministry reported shooting down 69 drones and four Flamingo cruise missiles, saying the fire resulted from debris. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak claimed Ukraine also hit a refinery in Saratov, a claim that remains unverified, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the notion of a Ukrainian moratorium, accusing Kyiv of refusing peace.

Why it matters

The renewed strikes could intensify the energy war between Ukraine and Russia, affecting fuel supplies and civilian safety.
