ANO and STAN grapple with coalition options after Olomouc council election

ANO secured 13 of 45 seats in Olomouc, while STAN won nine, and both parties are now negotiating possible coalition structures amid uncertainty.

In Olomouc’s council race, ANO emerged with 13 mandates and STAN with nine, but neither side has committed to a joint governing pact. STAN leader Marek Zelenka called a partnership “very undesirable” and announced that the parties would not meet for post-election talks, a stance echoed by ANO’s candidate Miroslava Ferancová, who said negotiations have stalled. Analysts suggest that a stable majority would still need a third partner, pointing to ODS, KDU-ČSL or the three-seat “Milujeme Olomouc” coalition as possible allies.

Smaller groups such as ProOlomouc, SPD, Trikolory and Svobodní also hold seats, complicating coalition arithmetic. Party figures, including Ladislav Okleštěk of ANO and Víta Rakušan of the mayoral association, warned that forming a coalition will be challenging despite ANO’s relative strength.

Why it matters

The outcome will determine who controls Olomouc’s city government and its policy direction for the next four years.
