Bolojan questions Grindeanu’s grasp of Romania’s budget deficit dynamics

Former premier Ilie Bolojan used Facebook to accuse Grindeanu of confusing a stage-deficit with the final-year deficit, comparing it to emptying and refilling shoe-box cash reserves.

Ilie Bolojan posted a sharp critique of Grindeanu on Facebook, asking whether he knows the difference between a stage-deficit and the year-end deficit, using the metaphor of taking money out of shoe boxes and refilling them later. Bolojan said Grindeanu is effectively serving as a prime minister, announcing policies and shaping the agenda for Niculescu. He noted that rating agencies have not downgraded Romania and have issued forecasts for upcoming deficits, stressing that these agencies scrutinize every detail to protect their credibility.

The former premier accused the Finance Ministry of providing misleading information to the agencies, especially while PSD held positions in the ministry throughout the interim period. He warned that this could damage Romania’s relationship with financial markets and investors. Bolojan suggested Grindeanu may be fabricating excuses for potential budget shortfalls and urged close monitoring of upcoming budgetary adjustments and spending controls.
