CJP leaders demand chief election commissioner’s resignation amid phone seizure concerns

CJP co-conveners Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das accused police of illegally holding their phones and vowed to keep protesting until chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar steps down.

During a news conference at the Press Club of India, Cockroach Janata Party co-conveners Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, joined by Ratna Singh and student leaders Aishe Ghosh, voiced concerns that police seized their mobile phones without a seizure memo and may have hacked or cloned them. They reported being held without access to lawyers for more than 24 hours and described the detention of several activists, including members of SFI and AISF, as assaults.

The trio declared that their protests will persist until chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigns, demanding broader accountability across the country. They also accused right-wing extremist groups of inciting violence and mistreating women in Connaught Place. Additional allegations included the denial of family contact for detainee Dipke and a lack of intervention by the National Human Rights Commission. The press conference ended with police entering the venue, prompting a brief commotion.

Why it matters

The allegations raise questions about police conduct, electoral oversight and civil liberties in India.
