Gaza residents revive destroyed books to keep children learning amid war

A book rescued from the rubble of an Israeli airstrike now helps a 10-year-old student continue her education in Gaza.

The Gaza war has destroyed nearly all school buildings, leaving hundreds of thousands of children without classrooms. Long-time collector Mohammed Saad rescued about 12,000 volumes from the ruins of his own library and established a tent-library called Athar in Deir el-Balah, where he and his son clean and repair the books. Parallel efforts by Omar Hamad and his team have retrieved roughly 3,000 additional titles, some donated by families of the deceased, and enlist bookbinder Jameel Mikdad to restore heavily damaged copies despite soaring material costs.

These restored books are offered to children at symbolic prices or loaned through the Phoenix Library, providing a rare avenue for learning. Ten-year-old Aya al-Shawa now holds Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Adventure of the Empty House,” illustrating how rescued literature is returning to its original purpose: to be read. The initiative highlights the resilience of Gaza’s cultural life amid ongoing conflict.

Why it matters

Preserving books gives Gaza’s children a lifeline to education and hope during war.

  3. Sep 15 Lebanon’s National News Agency said Israeli forces set fire to a government hospital in the town of Mays al-Jabal, Marjayoun, in southern Lebanon on Friday. The report added that Israeli military vehicles moved through Al-Mansouri in the Tyre district, an explosion occurred in Al-Bayyadah, and artillery shelling targeted Al-Mansouri. The Israeli army has not responded, and the agency provided no specifics on the damage or any casualties at the hospital. These incidents come despite a US-mediated framework agreement reached in June that outlines a phased Israeli pull-out from Lebanese territory and the deployment of the Lebanese army to vacated zones. Israel continues to conduct operations in the south, maintaining control over areas occupied for decades and others seized in recent conflicts. Lebanese official figures record at least 4,386 killed and 12,407 wounded since March 2, while the Health Ministry cites a total of 8,953 deaths and 30,643 injuries from Israeli attacks since October 8, 2023.
  4. Sep 19 Netanyahu pledged legislation to strip citizenship from those who “defame” soldiers.

  6. Sep 28 Overnight Israeli airstrikes and artillery hit several towns in southern Lebanon.
  7. Oct 2 A trailer for NAZA was released, revealing soldier testimonies and the film’s title origin.
