Greek opposition demands answers after US ambassador allegedly threatened to topple government

After the Wall Street Journal published an account alleging US ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle told Greek officials she could dismantle any government, Greek opposition parties pressed the Athens administration for an immediate explanation. The article described a heated exchange at a March dinner in Athens where Guilfoyle referenced the collapse of the Romanian government and suggested she could do the same in Greece, prompting Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou to reject the claim.

PASOK’s foreign-affairs and energy committee heads, Dimitris Mantzos and Frangiskos Parasiris, said the accusations raise serious questions and cannot be met with silence. SYRIZA, the ELAS movement and the Communist Party (KKE) have also issued statements demanding clarification. The opposition warned that such alleged diplomatic pressure erodes citizens’ confidence in state institutions and stressed Greece’s right to act as an independent, sovereign democracy.
